The Vitalant Blood Center in McAllen may be closed for up to two weeks due to extreme damage the building sustained during the severe thunderstorms that barreled through Hidalgo County early Saturday morning.

However, despite the significant challenges for blood collection, Vitalant said in a news release that it will have a mobile collection bus parked at 1400 S. 6th Street for those who wish to donate.

“Vitalant needs to collect at least 150 units of blood per day to meet hospital needs in the Rio Grande Valley,” the release stated.

As for the building, heavy rain and wind caused extensive roof damage, causing flooding and unsafe conditions within the building.

Crews are working to repair the building and restore operations, but they have informed Vitalant that they are aiming to complete the repairs in 10 to 14 days.

In the meantime, Vitalant will be relying on mobile bus operations.

“While this is a significant challenge for blood collection in the area, we know our team in the Valley is as dedicated as any in the country to ensuring that there is a safe and ample blood supply,” James Dugger, vice president of the South Division of Vitalant, said in a news release. “They will continue to work even harder to make up the difference.

“We invite all blood donors to join us in ensuring that everyone who needs blood in the Valley will have it available.”

Donors of all blood types are needed to keep an adequate supply.

“Type O-positive is the most transfused blood type while O-negative can help patients of any blood type,” the release stated. “Donated platelets, which often help cancer patients, are needed to ensure that treatments can continue. Please consider donating and helping those needing transfusions in the Rio Grande Valley.”
