Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider

Funeral arrangements have been announced for longtime Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn M. Snider, who died late Monday.

He was 58.

Visitation will take place at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 501 E. Kuhn in Edinburg, from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday. A recitation of the rosary will be held there that evening at 6 p.m.

The Revs. Manoj Kumar Nayak and William “Bill” Gural will lead mourners in a funeral Mass at the church the following day, Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.

After the service, Snider will be interred at Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery, 1701 E. Richardson Road, with “full firefighter honors to pay tribute to Chief Snider’s many years of dedicated service to the department and community,” according to a news release from the city of Edinburg.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of Chief Snider,” Edinburg Deputy Fire Chief Ubaldo “Balde” Perez stated. “He was an exceptional leader, mentor and friend who will be greatly missed by all of us. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Snider is survived by his wife of 31 years, Edna Casas Snider, and their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Snider, as well as his siblings, Chris, Richard and Michael Snider, and Caroline Cooper and Jerice Porter.

He is also survived by a number of brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Several of Snider’s brother firefighters and friends will accompany his casket as pallbearers, including Octaviano “Octi” Hernandez, Brad Carlson, Andrew Economedes, Chris Barron, Raul Guzman, John Ovalle, Javier Perez and Pat Sidons.

Snider earned a number of honors and awards throughout a career that spanned more than four decades. He also had the distinction of serving as a leader in various firefighting, emergency management and first responder organizations.

He taught generations of firefighters throughout the Rio Grande Valley, many of whom now serve in leadership positions of their own.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Ceballos-Diaz Funeral Home in Edinburg.

In lieu of flowers, the Snider family asks mourners to honor the chief via donations in his name to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at gifts.mdanderson.org, to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or to the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department.
