McALLEN — Hundreds of subscribers turned an open house into a full house Monday morning at The Monitor.

Approximately 300 readers gathered with their laptops, tablets and cellphones in the newspaper’s conference room for one-on-one guidance into their digital subscription benefits, which include the e-edition, exclusive stories, archives and more.

Monitor Publisher Stephan Wingert, Director of Audience and Contact Center Robert Levrier and Aim Media’s Rio Grande Valley Media Network General Manager and Regional Sales Director Benita Mendell were among the staff members assisting attendees.

Complimentary donuts and coffee were served. An identical event was held Monday at the Valley Morning Star in Harlingen, which drew about 100 subscribers.

The Brownsville Herald will host its open house from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at 222 N. Expressway 77 (Venture X) in Brownsville.

The events follow the recent announcement that home delivery and single copy sales of the Monday and Tuesday print editions will end May 1 for all three publications.

Seven editions will be published weekly, as e-editions will remain available on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday through Saturday, editions will be delivered — and offered digitally.

Among Monday’s attendees at The Monitor were Hector Perez, of Alton, and Alberto Salinas, of McAllen. The cousins bumped into one another at the event.

Laptop at the ready, Perez was working to get his account active. He remarked it had been a while since he’d used the technology, and it was a little slow, “like me,” he joked.

Salinas, who had successfully logged in, was providing assistance while the two men caught up. A WiFi outage created a lull in progress.

But ultimately, Perez was able to access MyRGV.com with his subscriber information and view the e-edition.

“I think it’s great,” he said of the digital newspaper. “I can read it from anywhere, I just need this laptop.”
