Weslaco school board members will discuss at a special meeting Wednesday naming a lone finalist for the position of superintendent.

The board may also delegate authority to negotiate a contract with that person.

Weslaco has been without a permanent superintendent since December, when Superintendent Dino Coronado parted with the district on somewhat acrimonious terms.

Richard Rivera replaced Coronado as the district’s interim superintendent in early January.

Rivera, however, only agreed to stay on through June; he said he’d like to helm the district while it finds a permanent leader, but that he wouldn’t apply for the post himself.

Weslaco ISD has had difficulty finding stable leadership in the wake of a forensic audit in 2021; Rivera is the fourth person to helm the district since the launch of that audit.

Former superintendent Priscilla Canales quit just before the audit’s results were made public. Criselda “Cris” Valdez, Canales’ interim replacement, led the district for the next several months as the board began the somewhat tumultuous process of making changes based on the audit’s findings.

After a fairly aggressive superintendent search, the board named Coronado the lone finalist in March 2022.

Coronado resigned late last year with the board divided on his departure. Concerns over a personnel reorganization preceded his departure and financial concerns have followed it.

The forensic audit that spurred much of the change remains a topic of discussion at the district — the board talked about it once again just last month.
