The Edinburg Police Department says a good Samaritan held down a suspected drunk driver who crashed into the Hidalgo County Courthouse on Saturday morning.
In a news release, police said the unidentified 21-year-old suspect driving a white Ford F-150 drove through protective iron gates at the courthouse and hit a secondary fence surrounding an air conditioning unit at about 7:30 a.m. on 10th Avenue and University Drive in Edinburg.
A passerby held down the suspect, who attempted to run, according to the release.
“Severe damage was sustained to the F-150, along with the gate/fence, and a concrete pillar,” the release stated.
The suspect is charged with driving while intoxicated and unlawful carrying of a weapon.
Police Chief Jaime Ayala credited the person who helped detain the suspect.
