UTRGV student pleads guilty to possession of child porn

A University of Texas Rio Grande Valley student from Los Fresnos pleaded guilty Tuesday to possession of child sex abuse material found on a USB drive.

U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani announced that Israel Flores Jr., 21, admitted to possessing child pornography on a flash drive that he obtained while he was a student at UTRGV.

According to the indictment, Flores possessed several images and videos involving a prepubescent minor and a minor below the age of 12 on a Staples USB 2.0 flash drive.

The release states that Flores downloaded the child pornography using Kik and then placed that material on the flash drive for distribution and eventually gave the device to another individual.

“Flores acknowledged being the original owner of the flash drive and that it had been in his possession for a number of years prior to giving it to someone else,” the release said.

U.S. District Judge Marina Garcia Marmolejo accepted Flores’ plea and set sentencing for late June.

Flores faces up to 20 years in federal prison and will remain in custody pending that hearing.
