The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is looking for students interested in being a part of its first marching band to play at football games and other events.

Currently enrolled students, new freshmen or transfer students admitted and enrolled at UTRGV are invited to audition.

All majors are welcome. Students are not required to declare a music major to join the marching band, UTRGV said in its announcement.

Students who play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument are encouraged to audition for the marching band, as well as anyone who would like to be part of the color guard.

Students selected will perform with the marching band starting in the fall 2023 semester.

The marching band will play at football games, holiday parades and campus and community events across the Rio Grande Valley.

Those interested in joining the marching band should have good time management skills and be willing to attend three rehearsals each week, as well as games and other events.

The deadline to join the UTRGV Marching Band for the fall 2023 semester is Aug. 28.

Marching bands have a long history of playing at college football games, bringing enthusiasm to those in the bleachers.

UTRGV announced in November that it would bring football to the Valley with a plan to start competing in Division I level in 2025.

UTRGV will play the majority of its games at H-E-B Park in Edinburg and host one home game each season at Sams Memorial Stadium in Brownsville.
