A chase involving multiple law enforcement agencies in Brownsville last week resulted in the arrest of a 25-year-old man and the seizure of nearly 250 pounds of marijuana.

In a news release, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office said its deputies along with Border Patrol, the Texas Department of Public Safety, the Cameron County District Attorney’s Office and Cameron County Precinct 2 constables engaged in the pursuit that ended with Gilberto Hernandez Jr.’s arrest last Thursday.

The chase started after Border Patrol agents saw big bundles being loaded into a vehicle in the U.S. 281 Highway area in Brownsville, according to the release, which said deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop but Hernandez instead fled.

Authorities arrested him at the intersection of Frontage and 7th Street in Brownsville where law enforcement seized a little more than 240 pounds of marijuana.

Hernandez is charged with possession of marijuana and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.

He remains held in the Carrizalez-Rucker Detention Center on a total of $50,000 in bonds.
