Edinburg man gets 45 years in jealousy fueled murder of wife

Ismael Medrano

A jury on Thursday convicted a 52-year-old Edinburg man of murdering his wife after he saw a photo of her and another man embracing.

Following the verdict, the jury sentenced Ismael Medrano to 45 years in prison for the murder of his wife, Maria Garza, 49, who was killed exactly one year ago on March 17, 2022.

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office arrested Medrano after he called 9-1-1 that day at about 10:13 a.m. and confessed to killing his wife at their home in the 2900 block of Davis Road, according to a probable affidavit.

When deputies arrived at the location, they again called the number that called 9-1-1 and heard a phone ringing from behind a locked bedroom, which is where they found Garza dead on a bed with lacerations to her body.

Medrano was found next to her with a knife in his hand and with lacerations on his arms and his neck.

Investigators later met with their adult son who said that he and his father received a photo from an unknown number that showed Garza embracing another man.

The son asked his mother about the photo before her death and said she claimed the photo was edited.
