Jury sentences McAllen man to 25 years for ‘17 Edinburg murder

A 36-year-old McAllen man was sentenced to prison last Friday after he shot and killed a man during a deal gone wrong in July of 2017.

A jury sentenced Mario Enriquez Powell to 25 years in prison with over five years in credit for the murder of 26-year-old Edinburg resident Marquis Devon Holiday, court documents indicate.

Powell had initially been charged with capital murder, but jurors last week found him guilty on the lesser charge of murder following a trial.

He and his co-defendant, Bernardo Garcia Jr., 30, were both charged with capital murder and murder, respectively, as well as a drug possession charge in August of the same year once they were apprehended.

The shooting occurred on July 29, 2017, at around 1 a.m. in front of a house in the 1000 block of Tori Lane in Edinburg after a drug deal went wrong, former Edinburg assistant police chief Oscar Trevino said at the time.

Garcia was sentenced in 2019 to 50 years in prison with a little over two years of credit.

He pleaded guilty after waiving his jury trial and was sentenced by state District Judge Roberto “Bobby” Flores, court records show.

Flores presided over Powell’s trial last week.
