Aeromar is ceasing operations and all flights including out of the McAllen International Airport, ending a 35-year stint of uninterrupted flights in Mexico, the U.S. and Cuba, the city said in a news release Friday.
“Forging strong relationships is the essence of who we are at the City of McAllen, and we are sad to lose this important collaborator,” McAllen City Manager Roel “Roy” Rodriguez said in the release. “We stand in solidarity with our colleagues at Aeromar, thank them for their partnership throughout the years, and thank them for their tireless efforts at saving the airline.”
Between 2009 and 2023, Aeromar provided nearly 7,000 international flights in the region for nearly 200,000 passengers via a partnership with the airport.
City officials stated that this partnership was “mutually beneficial” as the airport’s commercial airline traffic “grew into one of the 10 busiest airports in Texas.”
Officials also said in the release that the airport accounted for 45% of the Rio Grande Valley’s commercial market share.
“Although Aeromar generated only about 2% of McAllen International Airport’s record travelers in 2022, the airline was an important partner for McAllen, as it provided the only non-stop route to Mexico City throughout South Texas,” the release stated.
In the meantime, Mexican carriers Aeromexico, Viva Aerobus and Volaris can assist customers with previously booked tickets with Aeromar.
“Passengers with a booked Aeromar flight are encouraged to reach out to these carriers for an opportunity to rebook their trips,” the release further stated. “For McAllen booked tickets, travelers may consider the following eligible airports: Reynosa International Airport (REX), Matamoros International Airport (MAM), and Monterrey International Airport (MTY).”
