An Edinburg police officer is OK after a drunk driver struck his unit early Sunday morning.

The city said that the crash happened at approximately 5 a.m. while Edinburg police were working an accident in the 6000 block of north IH-69C.

The officer whose vehicle was hit had arrived on scene to assist with traffic control and to remove debris from the roadway, which was possibly from the original accident, according to the news release.

“The secondary Edinburg PD unit was stationary in the inside lane and the officer exited the vehicle to remove a mattress from the roadway,” the release stated. “Shortly thereafter, a vehicle struck the rear of the Edinburg PD unit.”

That vehicle was a truck driven by 52-year-old Edinburg resident Raul Alberto Rodriguez, who allegedly admitted to having been drinking and who showed signs of intoxication, according to the release.

The city said he was unable to complete the field sobriety tests due to his physical state.

He is charged with driving while intoxicated and records indicate he has a previous conviction for the same charge, according to the release.
