Sales tax numbers for Nov. mostly down in Valley

State sales allocations for November were a mixed bag here in the Valley, with few cities posting year-over-year increases and those which did showing mostly modest gains.

Statewide, the $1.1 billion in local sales tax collected was 7.1 percent higher than a year ago.

The allocations are based on sales made in September by businesses that report tax monthly, as well as sales made July through September by those which file quarterly.

Among the larger cities in Cameron County, Brownsville led the way, up 5.85 percent over last year, followed by Los Fresnos, which posted a gain of 1.28 percent.

For the rest, things went downhill compared to a year ago.

South Padre Island posted the largest decline, down 16.85 percent, followed by Rio Hondo (down 12.21 percent) La Feria (down 6.69 percent), Harlingen (down 5.23 percent) and Port Isabel (down 3.44 percent).

In Willacy County, Lyford posted a gain of 19.46 percent while Raymondville was up 12.86 percent.

In Hidalgo County, Edinburg was up 17.76 percent from a year ago, followed by Mercedes (up 4.85 percent) and McAllen (up 3.77 percent).

In the negative numbers were Mission (down 5.26 percent), Pharr (down 1.74 percent) and Weslaco (down 0.49 percent).
