Truck collides with locomotive; burst into flames

A woman and her 5-year-old child are lucky to be alive after the truck they were riding in crashed into a Union Pacific railroad car minutes before it engulfed in flames.

The woman and child were able to get out of the truck before it caught fire, the Cameron County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release.

The accident happened Thursday at the intersection of FM 1846 and FM 106 in Rio Hondo.

Cameron County sheriff’s deputies, Texas Department of Public Safety, Rio Hondo police and Union Pacific police reported to the location in reference to a major accident.

The sheriff’s department said based on the preliminary investigation, the driver of the pickup truck was traveling north on FM 1846 when she collided with the locomotive. The initial observations showed that the railroad crossing warning lights were activated.

The fire was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

The DPS and Union Pacific police are investigating the accident.
