A police officer was involved in a car crash that stopped traffic in Edinburg and sent three people to the hospital on Tuesday.

The Edinburg police officer was driving a black Chevy Tahoe and traveling north on McColl Road about 12:30 p.m., according to a news release.

As the officer was turning left on Freddy Gonzalez Drive, the driver of another Chevy Tahoe, a gray one heading south on McColl Road, collided with the police unit.

According to the city’s news release, a witness reported seeing the driver of the gray Tahoe run the light as the officer was trying to make the turn.

Airbags in the police unit were deployed in the crash and the unit received a significant impact to its front.

The officer, along with the driver and passenger of the gray Tahoe were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police blocked the intersection and diverted traffic while the scene was cleared.

The incident is under investigation.
