DPS arrests Weslaco boxer for allegedly driving while intoxicated

Brandon Lee Figueroa

The Texas Department of Public Safety arrested Brandon Lee “The Heartbreaker” Figueroa on Sunday for allegedly driving while intoxicated, Hidalgo County jail records show.

According to jail records, Figueroa was arrested for driving while intoxicated with a blood-alcohol concentration level of 0.15% or more.

In Texas, a person is legally intoxicated when their BAC reaches 0.08%.

Figueroa, 25, is a Weslaco native who made his professional boxing debut on May 9, 2015 at the age of 18.

He became the World Boxing Association super bantamweight champion on Oct. 31, 2019, in a fight for the vacant title, though recently lost the title against Stephen Fulton last year.

His boxing record is currently at 25 wins, one loss and one draw.

“It’s a legal matter. We don’t comment on legal matters. Please contact his attorney,” said Tim Smith, vice president of communications for Premier Boxing Champions, who Figueroa has fought with, when asked for comment.

Attempts to reach Figueroa for comment have been unsuccessful as of press time Sunday.

The boxer was released from jail on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond the same day, according to jail records.
