Mission man charged with intoxication manslaughter for Alton crash

Walter Enrique Martinez

The Texas Department of Public Safety has charged a 42-year-old Mission resident with intoxication manslaughter for an early morning fatal crash north of Alton on Saturday.

Walter Enrique Martinez is charged with intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault for the crash that happened at approximately 12:03 a.m. on Moorefield Road south of FM 681, north of Alton.

He’s accused of killing 65-year-old Ernesto Gomez Sanchez, who died at the scene, and sending two others to the hospital with non-incapacitating injuries.

Sanchez was a passenger in the Mazda 6 driven by Martinez, who was also sent to the hospital before being transported to the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was traveling northbound on Moorefield Road when he crashed into a blue GMC Sierra that was traveling southbound.

Jail records indicate Mission police arrested Martinez a little more than a year ago on a charge of driving while intoxicated.
