Peñitas man found guilty of murdering wife in 2017 to be sentenced

A Peñitas man who was convicted on Tuesday of murdering his common-law wife with a cement block is scheduled to be sentenced Thursday, according to court records.

Eduardo Gonzalez Cruz, 34, bludgeoned his wife, 30-year-old Adaly Tellez Johnson, following a domestic dispute in 2017.

His trial began Sept. 13, and a jury found him guilty of murder on Tuesday after deliberating for about 7.5 hours.

Gonzalez was initially named a person of interest after Johnson’s body was found in her rural Peñitas home about 3:45 p.m. on Oct. 2, 2017.

“… Adaly appeared to have been bludgeoned to death,” authorities said at the time.

According to investigators, there were obvious signs of foul play at the scene and witness statements implicated Gonzalez.

He also implicated himself during an interview with authorities, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities said Gonzalez told them that he killed her early Oct. 1, 2017, during a domestic dispute.

“Blood evidence of an assault was found at the rear of the residence as well as a cement block with blood stains on it, believed to be the murder weapon,” a news release said.
