Brownsville police arrest man accused of shooting another man in the hand

Roy Erick Mujica

Six days after he was accused of shooting a 35-year-old man in the hand, Roy Erick Mujica, 29, was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Brownsville police said Mujica and the victim have been having issues in the past which most likely led to assault.

The Brownsville Police Department Fugitive apprehension officer with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force arrested Mujica Monday morning.

Investigator Martin Sandoval, spokesman for Brownsville BD, said Mujica was a suspect in the Sept. 13 shooting of the 35-year-old victim that occurred at the 2300 block of Sandia St. The victim and Mujica have been having issues in the past, Sandoval said.

The victim was transported to the hospital that night, and the Brownsville Police Criminal Investigations Unit took over the case, Sandoval said.

The department’s Criminal Investigations Unit identified Mujica through the victim’s testimony, and a warrant was issued, Sandoval said. The warrant was served at the 300 block of Milpa Verde. Mujica was taken into custody and transported to the Brownsville City Jail.

Mujica was arraigned Tuesday on one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. His bond was set at $100,000.

As of late Tuesday afternoon, he remained jailed at a Cameron County facility.
