Hidalgo man indicted for nearly 138 pounds of cocaine found in attic

A Hidalgo man accused of possessing cocaine was indicted Tuesday after authorities discovered nearly 138 pounds of the controlled substance stored at his residence, court documents show.

A grand jury indicted Enrique Bernardo Gamez on two counts of possession with intent to distribute.

According to the criminal complaint, Drug Enforcement Administration agents approached Gamez at his residence where he gave consent to a search on July 26.

The document states that agents questioned Gamez about a cardboard box they found inside the master bedroom to which Gamez admitted that it contained a package carrying little over a pound of cocaine.

In addition, agents found 57 more brick-shaped packages containing cocaine inside Gamez’s attic, the complaint said.

According to the document, the cocaine found in the attic weighed over 136 pounds.

Agents also found approximately $21,000 in U.S. currency inside the residence.

During an interview with DEA agents, Gamez revealed that he would receive payments in order to store the cocaine in his attic and would transport the controlled substance to unknown individuals for payment, the complaint said.

Gamez is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 1.
