McAllen officials didn’t let the humidity rain on their parade Wednesday, when they announced that the annual procession themed “Southpole and Beyond” will open opportunities to residents across the Rio Grande Valley to participate.

The annual Holiday Parade is scheduled to kick off on Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium, located at 2001 N. Bicentennial Blvd. in McAllen.

This year, McAllen is opening its application for the shoebox parade to anyone throughout the Valley. All entries for the shoebox parade must be on a shoebox that can include various festive decorations such as toys, lights and other arts and craft materials.

The parade, which attracted around 350,000 attendees in 2021, will be divided into several categories including elementary, middle school, high school and others.

The winner of the shoebox float competition will have the opportunity to see their shoebox be made into an “actual float” that will be included in the parade.

All entries can be submitted to the city of McAllen Office of Communications at McAllen City Hall, located at 1300 W. Houston Ave., third Floor.

The shoebox parade entries are due Nov. 23 by 3 p.m. For more information call (956) 681-1206.
