Hidalgo man arrested for nearly 138 pounds of cocaine in attic

Authorities arrested a Hidalgo man last Tuesday after agents discovered nearly 138 pounds of cocaine stored inside his residence, according to a criminal complaint.

Enrique Bernardo Gamez is charged with knowingly and intentionally possessing with intent to distribute a controlled substance.

On July 26, Drug Enforcement Administration agents approached Gamez at a residence in Hidalgo where he consented to a search, the complaint said.

Agents questioned Gamez about a cardboard box found inside the master bedroom to which he admitted contained a package carrying little over a pound of cocaine, the document reads.

Field testing of the substance resulted in positive for cocaine.

“Agents then found 57 additional brick shaped packages containing suspected cocaine in the attic of the residence,” the complaint said.

According to the document, the additional cocaine weighed over 136 pounds and also tested positive for cocaine.

In addition, the complaint says DEA agents found approximately $21,000 in U.S. currency inside the residence.

During an interview with the agents, Gamez admitted he knew there was cocaine in his attic and would receive payments in order to store the cocaine as well as transporting the substance to unknown individuals for payment, the complaint says.

Gamez is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Judge Nadia Medrano for a detention hearing on Wednesday.
