An Elsa man whose 3-year-old son fatally shot himself last year, pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a firearm in federal court Thursday.
Salvador Domingo Dueñez Jr. entered the plea Thursday before U.S. District Judge Randy Crane in McAllen on a federal indictment and is currently in U.S. Marshals’ custody.
Police arrived at his home, located in the 200 block of Begonia Street, on Oct. 18, 2021 in Elsa where they found Dueñez carrying his son in his arms after the child found a firearm hidden in a shoe box where his toys were.
Authorities learned that his son, Troy Blue Dueñez, shot himself with a Smith and Wesson pistol, described as a 9mm M&P Shield EZ.
Dueñez also faces four state charges, including making a firearm accessible to a child causing death and assault causing bodily injury, which are class A misdemeanors, as well as possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana, a class B misdemeanor. He’s awaiting arraignment on these state charges, which also include unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a third-degree felony.
He remains in federal custody and awaits arraignment on these state charges.
