Feds arrest man in country illegally who bought 20K rounds of ammunition

Homeland Security Investigations special agents on Friday arrested a Mexican man who was in the country illegally after learning he ordered 20,000 rounds of ammunition.

Sergio Rodriguez-Tenorio, who was born in 1995, is charged with possession of ammunition that traveled through interstate commerce while being in the country illegally.

HSI agents on June 27 had received information that Rodriguez would be receiving a large shipment of ammunition and obtained his order history from an online distributor, which confirmed that he purchased 20 boxes of 1,000-round count 7.62-by-39mm ammunition on June 19, according to a complaint, which said the ammunition was shipped from a facility in Connecticut.

The agents conducted surveillance Friday at the McAllen shipping address and watched Rodriguez arrive at 5:50 p.m. and load the boxes into a vehicle, according to a complaint.

HSI said Rodriguez then left and departed toward a residence in Mission, but was pulled over and arrested.

The complaint said Rodriguez admitted after his arrest to being in the country illegally and ordering the large amount of ammunition.

He made a first appearance Tuesday in McAllen federal court in front of U.S. Magistrate Judge J. Scott Hacker who ordered him temporarily held without bond pending a detention hearing scheduled for later this week.
