Butler facing DWI charge, maintains innocence

RAYMONDVILLE — An investigation into the school district’s special education program director’s drunk-driving charge continues, officials said.

Denise Butler is facing a DWI charge stemming from her arrest at about 11 a.m. June 14 during a traffic stop at FM 490 and Business 77 here, Sgt. Maria Montalvo, spokeswoman with the Texas Department of Public Safety, said Tuesday.

“If the trooper did obtain blood work, the results are pending,” she said.

Meanwhile, Butler remains in the position she has held for five years, Gustavo Acevedo, the district’s attorney, said.

“As long as she maintains certification from the state, she’s qualified to hold her administrative position and to teach,” he said, adding, “She maintains she’s innocent.”

“I can confirm that we are awaiting the outcome of this legal matter and that Mrs. Butler has been employed in good standing as the Raymondville ISD special education director for the past five years,” he added. “The district cannot comment on specific personnel matters.”
