Moreno

Edinburg police arrested one of their own after a sergeant patrolling early Saturday morning pulled over a man after he blew through a stop sign, according to a criminal complaint affidavit.

Adan Moreno, 39, a 12-year veteran of the Edinburg Police Department remains on unpaid administrative leave following his weekend arrest for driving while intoxicated.

The city issued a news release this weekend after Moreno’s arrest, but an affidavit expands on the allegations and reveals that Moreno did not cooperate with the investigation.

Edinburg police first noticed Moreno’s white Dodge pickup at about 4:26 a.m. Saturday in the 100 block of west Sprague Street, where the officer saw the vehicle appear out of line to the left of two other vehicles, according to the affidavit.

The officer followed the vehicle and saw it turn left onto 12th Avenue without signaling, but didn’t immediately pull the driver over as he headed toward University Drive.

After briefly losing sight of Moreno’s truck as it approached Cano Street, the officer said in the affidavit that he caught up with him at the intersection of 14th Street and University.

The officer then pulled Moreno over after watching him run a stop sign at Kuhn and 16th streets, according to the affidavit.

The officer reported in that document that Moreno smelled like alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and an unsteady balance. He also declined to perform standardized field sobriety tests and refused to provide a breath specimen.

Edinburg police then obtained a warrant for a blood specimen, according to the affidavit.

Moreno bailed out of the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond on the same day of his arrest.
