HARLINGEN — The larger of two playgrounds at Dixieland Park will be shut down through the end of the week as new equipment is installed, city officials say.
But it will be open and ready to go by the Fourth of July.
“The playground is, what, 12 years old, 10 years old?” said Javier Mendez, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department director. “It’s kind of getting some wear and tear, but the playground is still under warranty. So what we did is filed a claim with the manufacturer, and they brought us all new equipment. But we just didn’t have time to install it so we hired a contractor to put all the components in.”
“It’s going to be slides, some rails and other components to go on it,” he added. “It shouldn’t take very long. I think he said it was going to take two or three days to get everything in and installed.”
The playground now being refurbished is the larger of two at the city park, the other being for smaller kids, while this one is aimed at 5- to 12-year-olds.
Dixieland Park at 2501 S. Dixieland Road is a 20-acre greenspace, with the two playgrounds, a nine-hold disc golf course, pavilion, barbecue grills, restrooms and a popular fishing spot, the City of Harlingen Reservoir.
The rest of the park remains open while the playground work continues.
