Garcia

The identity of a man who stole a delivery truck Wednesday afternoon was revealed in a news release Thursday.

Francisco Orlando Garcia was charged with aggravated robbery after he allegedly stole a Rent-A-Center box truck and assaulted one of the delivery men, a probable cause affidavit said.

Edinburg Police were dispatched to the 1500 block of Carmen Avenue at approximately 4:18 p.m. in reference to a robbery.

Police officers made contact with the two victims, who identified themselves as employees for Rent-A-Center. They told police that they were at the location delivering merchandise for a customer.

One of the employees told police that after he made contact with the customer, he entered the back of the truck where the merchandise is kept. While he was inside, the truck began to move and the rear cargo door closed.

The man told police that “when the truck moved he fell onto the ground and struck his head causing his head injury and began to use his hands to stop merchandise from falling on him as the vehicle moved.”

According to the affidavit, when the truck came to a complete stop, the rear cargo door was opened by an unknown man described as, “a heavy set male who was shirtless with tattoos on his arm and wearing black shorts with the word ‘Army’ on it.”

The unknown man was later identified as Garcia, who the victim said was speaking incoherently. Garcia reportedly asked the victim to “stand beside him” and tried to wrap his arms around the delivery man “in an attempt to push him and further assault him.”

The delivery man told police he became fearful and ran away from Garcia, toward the location of the initial delivery.

Investigators with the Edinburg Police Department found the 32-year-old suspect near the area. He appeared to be intoxicated and matched the description provided by the delivery man. Garcia was also caught on video surveillance entering the Rent-A-Center truck and driving away.

Garcia remains jailed at the Hidalgo County Adult Detention Center for aggravated assault. His bond was set at $75,000.
