Alton police said Monday that a man who investigators initially believed had been killed in a ranch last week actually died of an overdose.

Police found the body of an unidentified man at a property on 6 Mile Line, just east of Conway Avenue, on Saturday morning. The man had visible injuries to his face, so police began a homicide investigation.

However, an autopsy later revealed the injuries were non-life threatening, according to a news release police issued Monday.

“After reviewing video evidence and receiving the autopsy results, it was determined that the preliminary cause and manner of death was an accidental drug overdose,” the release said, without mentioning the type of drug.

Police also did not disclose the man’s name, pending notification of next of kin.
