Want to be a La Joya ISD school board trustee? Now’s your chance.

Last week the district’s board approved requesting letters of intent and resumes looking to fill two vacant seats on the board left vacant in the wake of an ongoing Western Hidalgo County corruption scandal.

Former trustee Armin Garza resigned his seat in January after pleading guilty to conspiracy to defraud the United States. Former trustee Oscar “Coach” Salinas resigned in March after pleading guilty to extortion.

Facing public pressure, trustees on the board originally signaled support for a special election to fill those seats.

The board missed the deadline to call for a special election, and that’s no longer an immediate option.

The district’s attorney Jerry Muñoz told the board Wednesday that the deadline to appoint a trustee for Place 5 is July 13. The deadline for Place 6 is September 6.

“The district can post a notice on our website and run any necessary notices that we need,” he said. “Thereafter, the district can set a selection date and process.”

Whoever is appointed to those seats won’t hold them long without facing the prospect of an opponent.

The next opportunity to hold a special election to fill the posts will be in November.
