The city of Peñitas advised residents Tuesday to steer clear of Liberty Road and 3 Mile due to a large sinkhole in the area.
Images published on the city’s Facebook page appear to show several fairly deep holes in the middle of the road.
According to City Manager Beto Garza, local police officers found the sinkhole early Tuesday morning and reported it to the city. Hidalgo County crews arrived at the scene around 6 a.m. and placed barricades around the sinkhole.
“It was like a washout that happened under the road so it caved in because that area is still under heavy construction,” Garza said.
The sinkhole has been fixed by the construction contractor.
“It has been taken care of. It is safe but I highly recommend that you find an alternate route for the next few days while we wait out the weather to see if we are going to get anymore showers,” Garza added.
The sinkhole was observed at a time when heavy rains drenched the Rio Grande Valley overnight Monday and into Tuesday morning, dropping several inches of rain in the area.
