Edinburg appoints familiar face as permanent city manager

Edinburg’s interim City Manager Myra L. Ayala is now the new permanent city manager after the council agreed to hire her for the position.

Ayala, who previously served as Edinburg city secretary for 15 years, was selected to be the city’s new city manager Tuesday following a nationwide search that began in January upon the resignation of former City Manager Ron Garza.

Garza announced his resignation in early January in order to take a position with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and remained with the city until March 1.

It was then that Ayala was appointed the interim city manager.

She first joined the city of Edinburg in August 1998 and has since served in multiple roles, including senior secretary, records supervisor, and director of business operations and marketing for the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation, the city said in a news release.

Ayala was selected from a pool of 25 candidates, according to the city, which conducted the search with the help of Strategic Government Resources, or SGR, an executive recruiting firm.

“We were impressed with the pool of qualified applicants we received for the position,” Mayor Ramiro Garza Jr. said in the news release. “I’m confident we have selected the right individual for the job-someone that embodies the same core values as our residents. A person of integrity, compassion, and dedication to serving the public.”

The city said an official offer of employment will be extended to Ayala in the coming days and her official start date as the permanent city manager will be determined once the terms of her contract are finalized.
