Pharr EMS chief to recommend changes to emergency services in Texas

Gov. Greg Abbott appointed the chief of the Pharr Emergency Medical Services department to weigh in on emergency health care issues throughout the state.

Abbott announced the appointments of seven people to the Advisory Council on Emergency Medical Services, including Pharr Emergency Medical Services Chief Daniel “Danny” Ramirez, on Thursday.

A news release from the governor’s office said the council, which is also known as GETAC, recommends changes to the EMS/Trauma System to ensure that communities receive comprehensive and efficient emergency care.

Ramirez, a member of the Texas City Managers Association and the Texas EMS Association, also volunteers with the Pharr Volunteer Fire Department. He holds a degree as an Emergency Medical Technician from Texas State Technical College.

“As the head of our newly-formed municipal EMS Department, it is a notable honor that Danny is one of only a handful of appointees selected to serve on this Council by Governor Abbott,” Pharr Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez said in a news release.

The appointment is also indicative of the “superior level” of care and performance the city’s EMS department has demonstrated under Ramirez’s leadership.

“We are proud of Danny’s accomplishments, and Pharr now has a seat at the table not only to influence emergency healthcare services across the state but to also ensure that our region and our South Texas communities receive the attention and resources for comprehensive and efficient emergency care,” Hernandez continued.

Ramirez’s term is set to expire on Jan. 1, 2028.

“I am very happy to serve the state of Texas and represent the City of Pharr and the Rio Grande Valley in this capacity, helping shape the future of healthcare in Texas,” Ramirez said in a news release. “I thank Governor Abbott for this opportunity, as well as our South Texas state legislative delegation for their support of my appointment, and I look forward to serving on this Council.”
