Fifteen Conjunto groups representing 10 Rio Grande Valley schools will compete Saturday in the 6th Annual Texas Best Conjunto showdown at the Jacob Brown Auditorium on the Texas Southmost College campus in Brownsville.

La Cultura Vive en Brownsville will host the free event for elementary, middle school and high school Conjunto groups. The showdown begins at 12 noon.

LCVB hosted its first Conjunto showdown in 2016 and has been a 501-C3 non-profit organization since 2017, organized to keep youth engaged and interested completing high school and continuing their education.

Los Fresnos and Palmview high schools have participated in the competition from the beginning, while a group from Porter Early College High School is a first-time participant this year, LCVB chairman Carlo Hernandez said.

Schools new to the showcase this year include Edinburg, North and Weslaco East high schools, groups from the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo and La Joya school districts and a middle school from Mission ISD, Hernandez said.

In all, 110 students in 15 groups are to perform on the Jacob Brown stage.

“The reason that we have been successful has been due to the great support from TSC Trustee Adela Garza,” Hernandez said. “She was the person back in 2016 that made things happen for us. She’s the No. 1 reason that we are still active and making progress.”

Winning groups and individuals placing 1st through 3rd, will be presented with awards at the conclusion of the program.

Food and beverage concessions will be available outside the civic center.
