671 new COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County; 2 more deaths

Hidalgo County reported 671 new cases of the coronavirus Monday, its highest single-report increase since March 16, along with two more deaths linked to the virus.

Monday’s numbers cover both Saturday and Sunday, however 671 is well over three times higher than any other after-weekend case report made by the county this month. In contrast, officials reported 48 cases Monday, July 19; 172 on Monday, July 12; and 45 on Tuesday, July 6, when reporting resumed after the Fourth of July holiday.

The 671 new cases reported Monday included 120 confirmed cases, 550 probable and one suspected, bringing the county to a total of 62,237 confirmed cases of which 32,292 were probable and 2,267 suspected.

Monday’s fatalities — an Alamo man in his 50s and a woman older than 70 — bring the death toll for Hidalgo County to 2,933.

Area hospitals continue treating 153 patients with the virus, 47 of whom are in intensive care units.

Cameron County reported 227 more cases of COVID-19 Monday.
