Brownsville Community Improvement Corporation Executive Director Josh Mejia announced during a Rio Grande Valley Partnership event that the Musk Foundation has pledged an additional $1 million to BCIC’s Business Improvement and Growth (BIG) grant program.

BCIC confirmed on June 17 that the foundation had committed to $1 million to the BIG program, which BCIC board Chairman Michael Limas described as a “juggernaut of a program” for the economic development organization.

BIG has managed to leverage $450,000 over three years to bring in roughly $3 million in private investment for downtown businesses and properties to help spur economic development downtown.

Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX tweeted March 30 that he planned to donate $10 million to Brownsville toward downtown revitalization and $20 million to Cameron County schools, at least some of which have been receiving money from the foundation, which Musk established in 2002.
