DPS: Alcohol suspected factor in San Juan fatal crash

Alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor to a fatal crash that left one dead in San Juan, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Roma native Fidel Vielma Jr., 24, was pronounced dead on scene in a crash that occurred Saturday morning.

Preliminary investigation revealed a black GMC Sierra, which was occupied by Vielma and a female passenger, were “traveling at an unsafe speed” westbound on Juan Balli Road, west of Stewart Road.

According to the release, Vielma lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the roadway.

However, the vehicle went airborne after it struck a light pole, the release stated, and partially landed on top of “tractor implements.”

While Vielma was pronounced dead on scene, the unidentified female passenger was transported to a local hospital. DPS said in the release the woman remains in stable condition.

Though alcohol is suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash, DPS said a toxicology report is pending.

DPS continues to investigate the fatal crash.
