Hidalgo County reports nine COVID-related deaths, 378 new cases

Youth led the majority of cases reported on Thursday

Hidalgo County officials reported 378 people have tested positive for COVID-19 on Thursday, in addition to nine deaths related to the virus, according to a county news release.

Thursday’s deaths ranged from people in their 50s to those older than 70.

The death toll in Hidalgo County now stands at 2,727 as of Thursday.

Of the 378 cases, the county’s Health and Human Services Department reported 315 are confirmed, 41 are probable and 22 are suspected.

Another notable observation is the majority of Thursday’s 378 cases were led by the age group 0-19, with 204 total cases. The next age group with the most number of cases on Thursday was adults in their 20s, with a total of 53 cases.

Overall, the total number of positive COVID-19 cases in Hidalgo County is 83,259. Of that sum, 55,435 are confirmed, 26,543 are probable and 1,281 are suspected.

According to county officials, a total of 2,387 cases are active.

Officials also reported 159 individuals are hospitalized in county hospitals, with 63 patients in intensive care units.

Additionally, the county reported 155 individuals were released from isolation on Thursday, raising the total number of those released from isolation to 78,145.

As of Thursday, a total of 430,358 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Hidalgo County, with 346,357 tests results returning negative.

In Cameron County, officials reported 24 people have tested positive for the virus on Thursday, according to a news release, raising the total number of positive cases there to 38,080.

The county also reported two COVID-19 related deaths on Thursday: a Harlingen man in their 50s and a Port Isabel woman in their 80s.

As of Thursday, the death toll in Cameron County is 1,554.

Additionally, the county reported 176 individuals have recovered from the virus, raising the total number of those reported to have recovered to 34,405.
