SPI animal shelter helps find home for lost Spring Break chicken

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND — Amid Spring Break, this animal shelter had an unexpected visitor arrive at its facility.

On Monday, Friends of Animal Rescue (FOAR) received a wandering chicken that was found by animal control on South Padre Island near 5800 Padre Blvd.

FOAR Director of Operations Sherry Pindard said the chicken was a unique find.

“This is the first time we have ever had a chicken come into our facility in the 10 years we’ve been at that location,” she said. “We just thought it was so beyond, out of the normal.”

After hours of trying to locate and help the chicken reunite with its owner, FOAR personnel were able to get in contact with its owner.

Pindard said the owner is going to surrender the chicken, which is named Aurora.

Aurora will have a new home with a farm the shelter found.

“If this doesn’t show that we are actually the voice for the voiceless, I do not know what does. We care for all animals, not just dogs and cats,” Pindard said. “If it wasn’t for the donations that people give to us no matter what the size of the donation, $5 to $5,000, it truly goes to caring for the animals.”
