The Texas Department of Public Safety seized nearly 500 pounds of marijuana Wednesday and arrested four people after a traffic stop in Roma.

In a news release, DPS says a trooper stopped a beige 2005 Chevrolet SUV and a black 2019 GMC SUV traveling west on 4th street for traffic violations.

DPS did not say what those violations were.

“The vehicles refused to stop and began to evade. The vehicles came to a stop after crashing with a brick wall on I Avenue in Roma where both drivers and several passengers fled on foot,” DPS says.

DPS says it arrested four people who were all in the country illegally.

“A vehicle search revealed 40 wrapped bundles of marijuana concealed inside the vehicles,” the release states.

Authorities charged Julio Gomez, 29, Jose Nolberto Delgado Lala, 18, Jose Ignacio Hernandez, 25, and Wilian Isabel Gramajo Barreno, 41, with possession of marijuana, more than 50 pounds but less than 2,000 pounds.

DPS says it is continuing to investigate the case.
