Edinburg distributing water to residents lacking utilities

The city of Edinburg is distributing free cases of bottled water Wednesday morning to citizens who have no means to boil drinking water, according to a release issued Tuesday night.

Distribution will begin at 10 a.m. at the Activity Center at 123 East Mark S. Pena Drive. Only one case of water will be given to each resident and proof of residency will be required.

The city also stresses that the water is meant for people who have no means of boiling water.

Because of concerns of low water pressure the city issued a boil water advisory to residents Tuesday morning, the release said, noting that Tuesday evening at the Edinburg City Council meeting officials announced that water pressure had risen to appropriate levels and that crews were in the process of testing water samples.

“We do anticipate the boiling notice to continue at least till Thursday to verify that levels are completely safe for consumption,” City Manager Ron Garza wrote in the release. “This continues to be an unprecedented weather situation and we just want everybody to stay safe. Please check on your neighbors, on senior citizens, family and friends. Make sure everybody’s okay. Water distribution to those in need is just one way we can provide assistance.”

The release requests residents who still have water and electricity to reduce consumption and urges people to boil water for two minutes prior to consumption.
