City of Roma appoints new police chief

The Roma City Council on Tuesday afternoon appointed Iv Garza to head the city’s police department.

Garza, who previously served as a sergeant with the department, replaces longtime Chief Jose H. Garcia, who passed away on Jan. 4.

Garcia, who had planned to retire on Dec. 31, tested positive for the deadly virus in early December.

The City Council convened into executive session at approximately 5:33 p.m. and returned to open session at approximately 6:15 p.m.

After receiving the position of chief, Garza said he won’t let anyone down.

“I would like to thank everyone. City Council, city manager, for giving me this opportunity. I am sure I’m not going to let anyone down. It’s the right decision. I’m not going to let the citizens of Roma down,” he said during the video-conferencing meeting.
