Hidalgo County reports 8 deaths, 377 new COVID cases

A dozen deaths due to COVID-19 and 577 new cases were confirmed in the Rio Grande Valley on Wednesday.

Eight of those deaths are Hidalgo County residents, along with 377 of the new cases, according to a county news release.

This brings the death toll to 2,145, and the total cases to 48,386.

There are currently 249 people with the virus being cared for in local hospitals, of which 89 are in intensive care units.

Also on Wednesday, 329 people were confirmed to have recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries in the county to 43,386.

So far, the county has administered 281,367 COVID-19 tests, of which 232,371 have reaped negative results.

Neighboring Cameron County also confirmed four additional deaths due to the virus Wednesday, bringing the death toll there to 1,157.

County officials also reported in a news release 184 new cases of the virus, raising the total there to 27,926.

Additionally, 145 people recovered from the virus in the county, making the total recoveries 24,403.

Over in Willacy County, 16 more cases of COVID-19 were confirmed by county officials on Wednesday.

The case count there now stands at 1,474.
