RGC officer accused of pointing rifle at wife, punching her

The Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office alleges a Rio Grande City police officer pointed a rifle at his wife before forcing her into their car and punching her in the face.

Deputies arrested 27-year-old Roma resident Albert Garcia on Tuesday and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The probable cause affidavit does not indicate where or when Garcia was arrested.

“Albert Garcia … pointed a rifle at his wife,” the probable cause affidavit states. “Albert forced (her) into their car and punched her on the lip with his right hand, causing her pain.”

As of early Tuesday afternoon, he remained in the Hidalgo County Detention Center a $100,000 bond, records show.

The Rio Grande City Police Department announced Garcia’s arrest on Facebook Tuesday morning.

“Officer Albert Garcia has been with the Rio Grande City Police Department for over a year. Earlier today, we learned that Garcia was arrested and faces a felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon,” the post says.

The department says it holds its officers both on and off-duty to the highest standards of ethics, conduct and integrity.

“The Rio Grande City Police Department strongly believes being transparent with the community we serve is of the utmost importance,” the post stated.

The Rio Grande City Police Department says Garcia no longer works for the agency.
