The City of Brownsville launched a face mask design challenge for the local creative minds to showcase the community’s artistic flair as it continues to recommend wearing face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19 when venturing out to public places.
“Aside from protecting our citizens through the use of face masks, we wanted to engage our very talented and artistic community to showcase their creativity,” Brownsville Mayor Trey Mendez said. “We are a very united community and this is a way of bringing us even closer together.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that individuals wear face masks when out in public.
According to the BTX Cares official website, the challenge will be broken down into two categories: free hand design and digital design. There will also be three levels: beginner, intermediate and expert.
Winners will be chosen and recognized by the mayor and city commission during a Commission meeting and receive a $50.00 gift card from their favorite Brownsville restaurant, the website reads.
Winning designs will be reproduced and distributed throughout the community while supplies last and anyone who lives in Brownsville is encouraged to participate.
“Though the Governor of Texas has made it clear that local communities cannot require mandatory facial coverings, the science still shows that face masks, when worn properly, can help protect individuals from spreading the virus to others,” Mendez said. “The more individuals that choose to wear the mask properly, the lower the rate of potential spread.”
More information about the contest states that only one entry per household is allowed and only one gift card prize from any Brownsville restaurant is permitted.
Mendez said the City of Brownsville would like to thank everyone for doing their part to ensure the overall well being of the community and added the number of positives for COVID-19 continues to rise.
“I’d like for our citizens to know that the City administration and the Commission have been working tirelessly over the past 3 months to prioritize the safety of all Brownsville residents,” he said.
