Point Isabel School District police chief passes away

Officials in Port Isabel are mourning the loss of a local leader and friend who passed away late last week.

Point Isabel Independent School District Police Department Chief Jose A. De León, Jr., 46, died Friday, June 5, 2020, at Valley Regional Medical Center.

“With a heavy heart, Point Isabel ISD is saddened by the unexpected loss of Chief Jose A. De León, Jr. Chief De León, Jr. was very dedicated to the PIISD Police Department and always went above and beyond to make a difference in our district. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” wrote PIISD in a public statement.

De León’s friends and former colleagues flocked to social media on Monday after learning of his passing, sharing stories and words of praise for De León and his dedication to service, and offering support and strength to his loved ones.

“He was always just a phone call away with his kindness and knowledge to help our schools,” wrote a former colleague,” remembering her time spent working with De León.

Another, currently on staff at the department, wrote, “He was a good man and a great Chief who had a lot of great plans for our District and community. Serving was definitely in his heart. We will honor Chief De Leon by accomplishing those plans he had. He will be missed. Rest In Peace, Chief. My most sincere condolences go out to his family.”

The Port Isabel Police Department honored their fellow officer in a statement, writing, “Port Isabel Police Department is truly sorry to hear of the loss of Chief Jose. A De León, Jr. Words cannot describe what we are all feeling. We would like to express our sorrow and condolences to the family and friends of Chief De León, Jr. Rest in Peace.”

The Point Isabel Independent School District was not immediately available for comment on the Chief’s passing.
