Planting a seed: Group promotes healthy food, lifestyles

Brownsville Wellness Coalition’s Plant Your Seed fundraiser kicked off on Thursday morning at the organization’s location at 6th and Ringgold Street. Staff picked fresh herbs and veggies from a row of organic, locally-grown produce purchased from local farmers to serve those in need.

Money collected through Plant Your Seed will go straight back into the community. BWC’s mission has been to promote healthy food and lifestyles, impacting the overall health and well-being of the community through improving access to affordable produce and strengthening the local food system.

Plant Your Seed will help fund BWC’s food distribution efforts. The coalition has been contributing its produce bundles to organized distribution events across the city while also working with healthcare professionals to identify and assist residents who need support.

Bundles are $20 and can be reserved at www.brownsvillewellnesscoalition.com or through messaging the organization on Facebook. The bundles include one motivational herb planter that is hand-painted by local artist @sincerely.made.sam, who reached out to the coalition offering to help with the fundraiser.

Omar from Brownsville’s Warbler Coffee Co (@warbler.coffee) donated jars of cold brew yielding two servings. Staff at BWC noted the coffee takes 12 hours to make.

BWC’s other program, like La Cocina Alegre, are operating remotely. “We’re doing the program via Zoom to be able to contact other communities and reach the people that need to be reached,” said the program’s coordinator Jessica Davila.

“We have #GetShiftDone workers and they do food distributions. We still have our bundles here every Thursday from 8:15 to 11:00, or whenever we sell out. And, we’re still doing food distributions Tuesday and Thursday around the city.”
