Brownsville Repertory Theater to host play at Half Moon Saloon

The Brownsville Repertory Theater will host the play “Bad dates” starting this Friday at Half Moon Saloon in Downtown Brownsville.

Half Moon Saloon has been closed for more than a year and will reopen for the first time with this play. The events will kick off this weekend at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. for Sunday. They will resume next weekend at the same times.

“We want to be able to collaborate with the community down there. It is so important right now to be able to bring life back there, but safely and responsibly,” Carolyn Miller Wood, president, said.

When asked if future plays will also be hosted at the saloon, Miller Wood said there is always a possibility. She added they want to be able to represent what Brownsville has to offer and Half Moon Saloon is the perfect venue for that.

“I think there’s always a possibility. Depending on the play itself, or the show itself, we want to make sure that the venue is appropriate for the type of story. There’s always an option out there,” she said.

“We have a very diverse and very hard-working board and just having that diversity has helped us to reach out to different people in the community and not just the same places that are lot of the venues are,” “We want to be able to represent what Brownsville has to offer, the uniqueness that we have and Half Moon Saloon is the perfect venue for that, perfect timing.”

Tickets for the play are $18 for general seating and $25 for table seating.

The play is about a woman who has gone on bad dates and has a conversation with herself. Miller Wood said it is a funny play that will connect the audience with the cast.

“It is a story of a woman who has gone on bad dates and she’s having a conversation with herself, so it is a unique perspective that the audience gets to see,” she said.

“Her having a conversation in the mirror, if anybody has ever tried to press themselves to go out. Even if it is a date or for work, whatever it is when you have that conversation with yourself. So, it is funny to see her do that, it is an intimate relationship that the audience gets with the actor.”

Miller Wood said it is important to celebrate and support all the arts in the community. She added they are much needed especially right now during the pandemic.

“I think it’s important to celebrate and to support all of the arts out there. Whether it is something that’s for a more mature audience or even the kids that are out there that made something online,” she said.

“There’s life and we want to to be vibrant and represent what Brownsville has to offer. There are other things that are important as well, but we just have so much to give and stories to tell, and we need that right now.”
