HIDALGO — A man accused of murdering his wife had his bond set at $2 million during an arraignment Thursday afternoon, however, details about the death remain largely unclear.

Luis Antonio Rivera, 46, was charged with murder, a first-degree felony, on Thursday for the death of his wife, Edna Liliana Rivera.

At his arraignment, it was revealed the suspect has an extensive criminal history, including sexual assault and burglary among other charges.

According to a news release, Hidalgo police responded to a domestic disturbance at 2308 Monterrey Street at approximately 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.

When officers arrived, family members said their father had killed their mother.

Authorities have yet to reveal the identities and ages of Rivera’s children.

Investigators secured the crime scene after finding Edna Rivera’s body, the release said.

During the investigation, officers learned that Luis Rivera had fled the scene in his wife’s vehicle, a 2011 silver Ford Focus, after the death, according to the release.

“Hidalgo Police Department Investigators reached out to all local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to collaborate and join all investigative efforts,” the release said. “A manhunt was immediately initiated by HPD, U.S. Marshals Service, McAllen Police Department and the Hidalgo County Sheriff’s Office.”

At about 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Rio Grande City police managed to locate and apprehend Rivera in their city, the release said.

Hidalgo Mayor Sergio Coronado and Hidalgo Police Chief Romero Rodriguez held a press conference following the arraignment to address the case, though Rodriguez was unable to provide many details.

“At this moment I can’t give out those details as the investigation is ongoing,” Rodriguez said in Spanish, adding later, “You will get all that information [later].”

Rivera had his bond set at $2 million and will be transported to the Hidalgo County jail.
