The city of Pharr appointed former Hidalgo County District Attorney Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. to the position of deputy city attorney and prosecutor during a city commission meeting Monday.

Rodriguez and the Ricky Rod Law Group were unanimously approved during the meeting.

After his appointment, Rodriguez was invited to address the city commission about his new endeavor.

“Mayor, commissioners, councilor and city manager, thank you very much for this opportunity to serve the city of Pharr,” Rodriguez said. “My name is Ricardo Rodriguez Jr., and I’ve been around for a while. I’m looking forward to doing work for you and for the citizens of Pharr.

“I understand and appreciate the passion that all of you have in doing great things for the city of Pharr.”

The now-former DA just completed his second term as the county’s district attorney. He did not seek reelection for the position.

Rodriguez’s uncle, Toribio “Terry” Palacios, defeated Juan Tijerina, a defense attorney, by nearly 30,000 votes in the Nov. 8, 2022 election and was sworn in as Hidalgo County District Attorney on Jan. 2.

“We thank you and are honored to have you, equally,” Mayor Ambrosio Hernandez said. “We know you have an exceptional record, impeccable and the residents of Pharr are truly going to benefit from it.”
